How to select the best recordings of a performer who's received only the highest acclaim for the many albums he's released? Better to think of The Voice simply as a survey of bass-baritone {|Thomas Quasthoff|}'s triumphs on the Deutsche Grammophon label since 1999, ranging from Bach to Richard Strauss but centered firmly in the 19th-century German repertoire that's always been his specialty. With one disc devoted to his performances with orchestra and a second drawn from his lieder recitals -- the latter all accompanied with splendid sensitivity by pianist {|Justus Zeyen|} -- this compilation captures both the essence and the full range of Quasthoff's work. From his ineffably moving {|Bach album|}, the cantata Ich habe genug is included in its entirety on the orchestral program, alongside highlights from his recording of German Romantic arias, juxtaposing the comic flair of Albert Lortzing's Der Wildschütz with the lyrical beauty of O du, mein holder Abendstern from Wagner's Tannhäuser. Schubert looms large on both discs, with rarely heard orchestral versions of several songs on the first -- including one bonus, Max Reger's orchestration of Greisengesang, that hasn't previously been released. The largest selection of tracks on the second disc comes from Quasthoff's wide-ranging 2004 Romantic Songbook -- featuring Mendelssohn, Loewe, Schumann, and Strauss as well as Schubert -- while one of the singer's earliest DG albums, a Brahms and Liszt recital, is also well represented. Whatever the repertoire -- even the surprising bonus that closes the program, a solo Jazz Improvisation -- the appeal of Quasthoff's singing is constant, and with the rich variety of tone colors conjured by his voice, as well as the seemingly boundless degree of his interpretive involvement, Quashoff's place as one of the great singers of his time is assured.
