I have read many plays & none have succeeded in moving me--mind, body, & soul--the way Arcadia has. #Let the intellectual acrobatics wash over you if that is not your cup of tea, but read it, nonetheless. #Something worth wondering about, Dec 16, 1999#Reviewer: Xin Jia (San Gabriel, CA United States) -#Arcadia is one of the most touching & enlightening works of literature I have ever read. The interweaving of ideas from physics, fractals, literature, architecture, history, psychology & many other fields of knowledge hidden in the play is just perfect. Never have I read anything that blends so many unique ideas into itself & does it with such clarity. Layers after layers of ideas are treasured into the hilarious dialogues between the lively characters, & every one of them is worth wondering about. Among these ideas present are some quite obvious & a bit hackneyed ones: sexual attractions are extraordinary forces of nature, history is a cycle of recurring events, & the world is slowly reaching an equalibrium which means the end of all; as contrast to these ancient topics, Arcadia also opens gates to very profound yet reasonable ideas: the present is mathematically interpretable, the future is technically derivable, & the past is always with us. It takes the mind of a genius, like Tom Stoppard, to formulate these ideas & present them to the public in a single neat play that is very limited in setting & amount of characters. In general sense, Arcadia is marked as a comedy because of the peculiarity of some of the characters; however, it is also a tragedy, a romantic story, a comforting book, a philosophical question, & a scientific term paper. That's why this play, in my idea, stands top of various other great contemporary writings. Unfortunately, perfection is impossible in reality; & like everything else in the world, Arcadia has some flaws due to the human factor. Tom Stoppard, after all only a gifted man among men, inevitably gives the readers a sense of vanity through his showing off of his breadth of knowledge. He is a great & sadly underrated writer, I agree, but he is no Gauss, Einstein nor Aristotle. The brief involvements of math, physics, & philosophy do help to develop the ideas, but I believe they are just there to impress the readers. The mathematical, physical, & philosophical theories are not discussed to a depth to show that the characters have true understandings of these theories. Because so, Tom Stoppard's pride becomes a black spot in the fabulous painting of Arcadia; but he is no where to be blamed, for that there is no way to control the human factor in anything humans do; unless we stop doing things using our own knowledge, but let the things take their course & we follow the path of true nature. This book is a set of insightful reflections on Taoist philosophy and zen statements written by (of all people) a mathematical logician. The author provides the reader many serious and even humorous discourses about life and the path we choose to live. It is filled with amazing logic that is applied to the Taoist statements which become more clear and precise ... from this perspective. \nHere is the approach the author takes: he describes how the Tao is formless, it is silent, it is vague, it does not command and does not argue ... He then discusses how the Tao can be proven to 'exist'. He delves into why the Tao is spontaneous and how it manages to remain leisurely, too. There are discussions on selfishness, altruism, "trusting one's true nature", "letting things go their own way" vs "on making an effort" adn "on the art of management". One of the shortest but most erudite chapters is entitled, "abiding in the Tao". The Taoist abides in the Tao not becasue it is his duty, nor because he is commanded to, neither is he afraid of the Tao ... he does so ... because "he loves to". While the true Tao is nameless, the Tao that is named, becomes the "Mother of all beings". Also, Smullyan tells us, "this unnamed Tao is more serene, 'more truly itself' than the named Tao."\nThis book does not take a conventional approach to describing Taoist philosophy, instead through the author's particular unique lense we get insight into this paradoxical subject. The book is replete with examples of Taoist and Zen sayings and logical comparisons which enhance the author's viewpoint of life. Reading this book is a pleasant experience for anyone wanting to explore how Chinese philosophy relates to life.
