Interest in the study and conservation of earthen architecture has been growing steadily since the first meeting nearly 30 years ago. Increasing concern for sustainable development, affordable housing and energy conservation has also heightened enthusiasm for the use of earth for new construction in many parts of the world, particularly as one third of the planet’s population continue to thrive and reside in an earthen habitat.

In two volumes, Terra 2000 includes the papers from Terra 2000 (preprints volume), which brought together experts from around the world to discuss new ideas and developments in the conservation of earthen architectural structures.

The post-conference volume completes the record of the keynote speeches, records the rapporteurs’ reports of the proceedings and makes key recommendations for international action on earthen construction and its conservation.

Many of the issues covered are relevant to building conservation in particular and heritage conservation in general.
