The Hemingway Review Volume 25, Number 2, Spring 2006CONTENTSArticlesNarbeshuber, Lisa.Hemingway's In Our Time: Cubism, Conservation, and the Suspension of IdentificationSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961. In our time.Cubism.Abstract:Taking issue with criticism that links In Our Time to Cubist technique and theory, the essay nevertheless finds the comparison of Hemingway's stories and Cubism fruitful for what it tells us about form in his work. The liberated tone of early Cubism stands in stark contrast to the restrictive tone of In Our Time. Hemingway's collection focuses mostly on the isolated, meditative, reflexive character of Nick, whereas Cubism strives for the democratic and the social. In Our Time assumes a certain depth, whereas Cubism creates flat surfaces.Field, Allyson Nadia.Expatriate Lifestyle as Tourist Destination: The Sun Also Rises and Experiential Travelogues of the TwentiesSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961. Sun also rises.Paris (France) -- Description and travel.Travelers' writings -- History and criticism.Abstract:In The Sun Also Rises, Hemingway depicts the fictional movements of his characters as experiential travelogue, making the expatriate artist lifestyle a tourist experience. While not explicitly a guidebook, the novel belongs to the tradition of period travelogues such as Pages from the Book of Paris, Paris with the Lid Lifted, How to be Happy in Paris (without being ruined), and Paris on Parade. Such books served as guides to a lifestyle, rather than to monuments or museums. Jake Barnes's emphasis on his environment and recurrent references to the streets, bars, and cafés frequented by his expatriate companions place The Sun Also Rises within a body of travel literature describing the infamous expatriate lifestyle.Kaye, Jeremy. The "Whine" of Jewish Manhood: Re-Reading Hemingway's Anti-Semitism, Reimagining Robert CohnSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961. Sun also rises.Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961 -- Characters -- Robert Cohn.Cohn, Robert (Fictitious character)Jews in literature.Masculinity in literature.Abstract:The article examines the significance of Robert Cohn, The Sun Also Rises's infamous Jewish boxer, to the construction of masculinity in Hemingway's novel. Whereas a long critical tradition has treated Cohn's Jewishness largely as evidence of Hemingway's supposed anti-Semitism, the author maintains that Cohn's Jewishness has subversive potential. He asks how we can reimagine Cohn, not as an object of anti-Semitism, but as an agent of Jewish manhood, disrupting the novel's privileged pairing of hegemonic and Heming- wayesque masculinity.Kruse, Horst Hermann.Allusions to the New Testament and The Merchant of Venice in "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen": Hemingway's Anti-Semitism ReconsideredSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961. God rest you merry, gentlemen.Bible. N.T. -- Influence.Shakespeare, William, 1564-1616. Merchant of Venice.Abstract:"God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen" has confused readers and critics alike. The essay points out allusions to The Merchant of Venice and the New Testament, describing how they combine with other subdued references to form an attack on puritanical attitudes in contemporary America. In breaking up the stereotypical view of the Jew and in setting up the Jewish Doc Fischer as a Christ figure, Hemingway deliberately atones for previously anti-Semitic writing. Study of the story's composition and early publication history also supports these findings and argues for a reconsideration of commonly held views concerning Hemingway's anti-Semitism.Special Section: Under KilimanjaroTwelve scholars with diverse critical approaches offer their first impressions of Under Kilimanjaro, the complete version of Hemingway's Africa book newly published by Kent State University Press.Miller, Linda Patterson, 1946-From the 'African Book' to Under Kilimanjaro: An IntroductionSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961. The Foundation manages the rights to Hemingways posthumously published and remaining unpublished work. In 1980, a group of Hemingway scholars assembled for a conference near the John F. Kennedy Library (the principal repository of Hemingway manuscripts and memorabilia) and formed The Hemingway Society. The Societys work has emphasized "the promotion, assistance and coordination of scholarship and studies relating to the works and life of the late Ernest Hemingway." One of its most important activities includes publication of The Hemingway Review, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published twice a year. The journal specializes in researched scholarship on the work and life of Ernest Hemingway. The Hemingway Review is published twice a year, in November and May, by The Hemingway Society and The University of Idaho Press. Averaging about 150 pages in length, each issue of the journal specializes in feature -length scholarly articles on the work and life of Ernest Hemingway, and also includes notes, book reviews, library information, and current bibliography. All critical approaches are welcome, including but not limited to historical, textual, biographical, source, and influence studies, as well as gender-based, multicultural, ecocritical, and other post-structuralist methods.SOME FACTS ABOUT The Hemingway Review§ The Hemingway Review welcomes all critical approaches, traditional, contemporary, and cutting edge. Submissions are reviewed by scholars specializing in the method used and/or subject treated.§ The journal does not ordinarily publish fiction, poetry, or other writing that is not researched scholarship. Prospective contributors are encouraged to familiarize themselves with past issues.§ All work considered for publication is subjected to rigorous blind peer review by at least two outside readers in addition to the editor, making work published in The Hemingway Reviewvaluable for tenure and promotion dossiers.§ Twenty-four distinguished Hemingway scholars advise on editorial practices.§ In addition to feature-length articles, The Review includes notes, letters to the editor, book reviews, grant and fellowship information, and current bibliography.§ The Hemingway Review enjoys virtually limitless circulation to college, university, and public libraries via on-line subscription databases including Project Muse, Proquest, Ebsco, and Gale Infotrac.§ In addition, The Hemingway Review circulates in paper to hundreds of individual Hemingway scholars and college and university libraries around the world. We out-circulate not only other single-author journals, but also many journals with a broader scope.§ The Hemingway Review places scholarship directly into the hands of those readers most likely to apply it in teaching and research., Hemingway Society and The University of Idaho Press, 2006, 4, The Hemingway Review Volume 26, Number 2, Spring 2007CONTENTSTrodd, Zoe.Hemingway's Camera Eye: The Problem of Language and an Interwar Politics of FormSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961 -- Aesthetics.Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961 -- Language.Abstract:Far more often than Hemingway's work, the writings of James Agee, John Dos Passos, Arthur Koestler, and George Orwell are examined for their politics, and their politics of form. But Hemingway's multi-focal aesthetic situates him alongside these more obviously politicized writers. Built upon his famous "iceberg" theory of omission, and imitating film rather than single-shot still photography, Hemingway's multi-focal aesthetic confronted the problem of "official" history and interwar doubts over language's ongoing capacity for expression.Rebollo, Anthony E.The Taxation of Ernest HemingwaySubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961 -- Finance, Personal.Finance, Personal -- United States.Taxation -- United States.Abstract:Taxes played a surprisingly prominent role in the life of Ernest Hemingwayso much so that he personally dealt with, or wrote about, most of the major tax concepts embodied in the Internal Revenue Code. This article notes Hemingway's written observations about such tax matters, including remarks about the state of his tax affairs and possible investigations by the Internal Revenue Service. The article, which focuses on tax issues not typically covered in existing biographies, concludes with an assessment of Hemingway's outlook on and approach to dealing with extraordinarily onerous tax obligations.Cheatham, George, 1952-The World War I Battle of Mons and Hemingway's In Our Time Chapter IIISubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961. In our time.World War, 1914-1918 -- Literature and the war.Mons, Battle of, Mons, Belgium, 1914.Abstract:A look at the mention of "Mons" in Chapter iii of In Our Time will show that Hemingwayat least in Chapter iii and by extension in his larger textdeployed literal details of and topical allusions to this important early battle of World War i. Such references have culturally-coded meaning that Hemingway's contemporary audience would have understood, but that may elude us today. This essay will show further that Hemingway manipulated such meaning to achieve particular effects with possible interpretive implications.Kale, Verna.Hemingway's Poetry and the Paris ApprenticeshipSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961 -- Poetic works.Abstract:Hemingway's poetry, which he published only during the first decade of his career, appeared almost exclusively in "little magazines." This poetry has never garnered much scholarly attention, and Hemingway himself often downplayed its value or significance. His unwillingness to claim the poems, the early date of their publication, and their striking parallels to developments in his prose writing all indicate that the poems were part of the author's training as a writer. These poems thus serve as an important archive of his apprenticeship, revealing information not only about the development of his style but about the formulation of his authorial persona.Fore, Dana.Life Unworthy of Life?: Masculinity, Disability, and Guilt in The Sun Also RisesSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961. Sun also rises.Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961 -- Characters -- Jake Barnes.Barnes, Jake (Fictitious character)People with disabilities in literature.Masculinity in literature.Abstract:This essay re-evaluates the character of Jake Barnes from a disability studies perspective. Previous interpretations that treat Barnes's trauma realistically still tend to reinforce traditional stereotypes about disabled men, including the notion that Jake may "turn" gay because of his injury. However, the text suggests Hemingway's awareness that cultural narratives make disability more than a personal problem; one of the biggest obstacles to Jake's rehabilitation is a "medical model" of disability that pathologizes any impairment and compels disabled people to continually "prove" they are "normal."Bethea, Arthur F., 1960-Raymond Carver's Inheritance from Ernest Hemingway's Literary TechniqueSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961 -- Influence.Carver, Raymond -- Criticism and interpretation.Abstract:Ernest Hemingway's domestic stories provided models for and a significant influence on Raymond Carver, one of America's most important short story writers during the second half of the 20th century. Drawing most of its evidence from Carver's "Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?" and the Hemingway classic echoed by Carver's title, "Hills Like White Elephants," as well as from "Cat in the Rain," this article illustrates how the authors use indeterminate pronouns, open endings, traditional and mimetic symbolism, nonmimetic techniques including the symbolic resonance in numbers and the omission of key details to create meaning in subtle, complex ways.NotesOliver, Charles M.Hemingway and the OEDSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961 -- Language.Oxford English dictionary.Abstract:The second print edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (1989) shows 39 entries crediting Hemingway with a word's first use in English, citing dates, titles, and quotations. This note looks at the new words Hemingway has contributed to our language from "crut" to "whunk"; the foreign language borrowings he has given currencysuch as bal musette, cojones, and tenente; and even the words reflecting Hemingway himself, such as "Hemingwayesque" and "Hemingwayan."Lester, Jennifer.Reading For Whom the Bell Tolls with Barthes, Bakhtin, and ShapiroSubject Headings:Hemingway, Ernest, 1899-1961. For whom the bell tolls.War in literature.Abstract:Using the theoretical work of Roland Barthes, Michael Shapiro, and M.M. Bakhtin, this essay revisits For Whom the Bell Tolls as a sociopolitical text on war. The essay analyzes how Hemingway frames the imagery and narrative of war, creates layers of discourse to tell the story of war, and codes social experiences of war within the text.Book ReviewsTyler, Lisa, 1964-Hemingways Italy: New Perspectives (review)Subject Headings:Sanderson, Rena, ed. The photographs in this book are offered as an overview of the incredible diversity of form and structure which is Frank Lloyd Wright's legacy to us. Wright designed buildings that added new dimensions to architectural experience. He continued to alter his buildings during construction as well as after they were built. Wright is unique in that he did not stop redesigning his buildings once started. Often he continued to improve his buildings while they were under construction. Seeing the spaces develop in three dimensions often gave him additional ideas. The architect must have clients. He must sell his works of art before he produces them. This requires an great faith on the part of the client--faith that can only be instilled by an architect who is confident and can convey that confidence to the client. Thomas A. Heinz is an architect and head of Heinz & Co., which makes reproductions of furniture designed by noted early twentiety-century architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Heinz's interest in Wright's work has led him to write numerous articles and books about the renowned architect's work, from Wright's buildings and furniture to his stained glass and the special window treatments that he constructed for clients. Writing in Interior Design, a reviewer noted that Heinz had written an "intelligent essay" for his book Frank Lloyd Wright, which features an eighty-page, full-color portfolio of Wright's work. This is a guide to key homes and buildings designed by probably the 20th century's most prolific and influential architect. Also includes an informative introduction, a section on Wright's interior designs, a list of demolished buildings, and a chronology. Illustrated with numerous full-color photographs. Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 - April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator, whose creative period spanned more than 70 years, designing more than 1,000 structures, of which 532 were completed. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was best exemplified by Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture." As a founder of organic architecture, Wright played a key role in the architectural movements of the twentieth century, influencing three generations of architects worldwide through his works. Wright was the pioneer of what came to be called the Prairie School movement of architecture, and he also developed the concept of the Usonian home in Broadacre City, his unique vision for urban planning in the United States. In addition to his houses, Wright designed original and innovative offices, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels, museums, and other structures., St. Martin's Press, Inc, 1982, 3, Gale ECCO, Print Editions, 2010-07-23. The contribution of agriculture to national income is declining at a faster pace compared to the percentage of population depending on it. The trends in profitability are not consistent across the years, which is a typical character of agriculture. A number of studies have tried to examine and understand the reasons; important ones include technological, environmental, and policy related. The poor performance and the declining profitability of agriculture due to one or more reasons have resulted in widespread household indebtedness, which is often identified as the main reason for the farmer suicides. This volume is a collection of papers in honour of Padma Bhushan Prof. Vijay Shankar Vyas who is amongst the first and leading policy economists in India. He has had significant policy contributions at the national and international levels. This collection is a reflection of his research interests and contribution to agricultural policy research. In total, 16 eminent scholars have contributed to the volume. These papers have been put together in a thematic format and deal mainly with five important aspects of Indian agriculture: i) Indian Agriculture: Policies and Performance, ii) Resource Policies and Agriculture, iii) Employment and Decent Work, iv) New Trends in Agriculture and Challenges, and v) Experiences from Other Countries. It also includes a paper on China which deals with poverty and inequality in the context of reforms. Most of the papers provide an all India perspective. Though some of the papers are specific to the themes and locations, they provide valuable insights in to the broader array of issues and problems afflicting the agricultural sector in India. The authors through their contributions have touched upon issues that are dear to Prof. Vyas and also provide futuristic scenario of Asian agriculture of which Indian agriculture is a vital cog. The conference on "Oral Literature and the Formula" was held in Ann Arbor in November, 1974. The purpose of the CCAMS is to argument and improve contacts between students of the ancient world (primarily the ancient Near East, Greece, and Rome) and devotees of everything modern (since the Renaissance). This endeavor has been guided by twin principles: "continuity," i.e., the ongoing and ever-renewed influence of the ancient world on the one we live in, and "comparability," the awareness that certain phases of the ancient experience have a special relevance to us just now, in our particular time and place. First edition. Softcover. g. Small quarto. XVII, [1], 290pp. Original printed wraps. The present volume is a collection of essays, commentary, and discussion from one conference organized by the Center for Coordination of Ancient and Modern Studies. Hardcover. New. Indian agriculture has been facing one of the worst crises since Independence.
