Seth Swirsky (born August 5, 1960, New Haven, Connecticut) is an American pop music songwriter (including the Grammy-nominated "Tell It To My Heart"), an author, a recording artist, a filmmaker, a political writer and a noted baseball memorabilia collector. During the baseball strike of 1994, the author was missing the sport he'd loved all his life, so he began writing to ballplayers, managers, umpires, and even some fans, asking them about their most memorable baseball moments. In this book, he has collected nearly 100 of the responses, from such greats as Cal Ripken, Jr., Whitey Ford, Harmon Killebrew, Brooks Robinson, Enos Slaughter, Ted Williams, and many more. In reading these letters you are also reminded of how much the players themselves loved the game and how much the appreciate the support of fans such as Swirsky. Swirsky's baseball collection included the ball that went between Bill Buckner's legs in the 1986 World Series (it was originally owned by Charlie Sheen; Swirsky got it in April, 2000); the only known bottle of 1986 sparkling wine from the Red Sox celebration that would never be; Reggie Jackson's third home run ball from the 1977 World Series; a ball signed by The Beatles the night they played their famous Shea Stadium concert in 1965; Tom Seaver's 1969 World Series jersey; the only known surviving ball from the second game of Johnny Vander Meer's two consecutive no-hitters, and the letter written by baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis banning Shoeless Joe Jackson from playing Major League Baseball, among other historic items. Many pieces in the collection were featured in baseball retrospectives at the Queens Museum of Art and The Bronx Museum of the Arts in 2004. Swirsky sold his 250 piece collection on May 3, 2012 through Heritage Auctions for close to $1.5 million. These are Lectures Presented Under the Auspices of the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Poetry and Literature Fund. Karl Jay Shapiro (November 10, 1913 - May 14, 2000) was an American poet. He was appointed the fifth Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1946. Poems from his books display a mastery of formal verse with a modern sensibility that viewed such topics as automobiles, house flies, and drug stores as worthy of attention. In 1963, the poet/critic Randall Jarrell praised Shapiro's work. In his later work, he experimented with more open forms, beginning with The Bourgeois Poet (1964) and continuing with White-Haired Lover (1968). His interest in formal verse and prosody led to his writing multiple books on the subject including the long poem Essay on Rime (1945), A Bibliography of Modern Prosody (1948), and A Prosody Handbook (with Robert Beum, 1965; reissued 2006). His Selected Poems appeared in 1968. Shapiro also published one novel, Edsel (1971) and a three-part autobiography simply titled, "Poet" (1988-1990). Shapiro edited the prestigious magazine, Poetry for several years, and he was a professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he edited Prairie Schooner, and at the University of California, Davis, from which he retired in the mid-1980s. Scarce Ellison item! Mrs. Gertrude Clarke Whittall (1867-1965) was one of the Library of Congress's great patrons of music and literature. Ralph Waldo Ellison (March 1, 1913 - April 16, 1994) was an American novelist, literary critic, and scholar. Ellison is best known for his novel Invisible Man, which won the National Book Award in 1953. He also wrote Shadow and Act (1964), a collection of political, social and critical essays, and Going to the Territory (1986). For The New York Times, the best of these essays in addition to the novel put him "among the gods of America's literary Parnassus." A posthumous novel, Juneteenth, was published after being assembled from voluminous notes he left after his death. Published in 1952, Invisible Man explores the theme of man's search for his identity and place in society, as seen from the perspective of the first-person narrator, an unnamed African American man in the New York City of the 1930s. In contrast to his contemporaries such as Richard Wright and James Baldwin, Ellison created characters that are dispassionate, educated, articulate, and self-aware. Through the protagonist, Ellison explores the contrasts between the Northern and Southern varieties of racism and their alienating effect. The narrator is "invisible" in a figurative sense, in that "people refuse to see" him, and also experiences a kind of dissociation. The novel also contains taboo issues such as incest and the controversial subject of communism. In 1964, Ellison published Shadow and Act, a collection of essays, and began to teach at Rutgers University and Yale University, while continuing to work on his novel. Bierley (3 February 1926 Portsmouth, Ohio - 9 April 2016 Ohio) was an American music historian. Among his awards were a Society for American Music Lifetime Achievement Award and receiving an Honorary Doctor of Music from Ohio State University. In World War II, he was a B-25 radio operator and gunner for the Army Air Corps. Bierley began an active musical career. He conducted extensive research on John Philip Sousa and wrote books about him, Henry Fillmore, and historical books about music. He wrote liner notes for album and CDs and magazine articles. He portrayed Uncle Sam at band concerts and lectured on musical subjects. Bierley founded Integrity Research Foundation and Integrity Press. John Philip Sousa ( November 6, 1854 - March 6, 1932) was an American composer and conductor, known primarily for American military and patriotic marches. Because of his mastery of march composition, he is known as "The March King". Among his best-known marches are "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (National March of the United States of America), "Semper Fidelis" (Official March of the United States Marine Corps), "The Liberty Bell", and "The Washington Post". Sousa began his career playing violin and studying music theory and composition. From 1880 until his death, he focused exclusively on conducting and the writing of music. He led the Marine Band for 12 years as director. Sousa aided in the development of the sousaphone. At the outbreak of World War I, Sousa led the Naval Reserve Band in Illinois.
