Lang takes the reader across the history of the city and notes important events, and how the city developed with the university over time.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and thirty-nine plates and in-text illustrations.Collated, complete.Lang is best remembered now for his 'Fairy Books', a series of twenty-five short story collections pertaining to mythology and fairy tales, the first published being 'The Blue Fairy Book' in 1889.Illustrated by a variety of different artists.Ink inscription to the reverse of the half-title, 'Ernest S. Davies, (from T. H. D.)'. Ernest Salter Davies was a Welsh teacher and educationalist, known for being the director of education in Kent from 1918 to 1938. He held a great influence into the development of education in the first half of the twentieth century across England. He won a scholarship in classics to Jesus College in Oxford before 1895. The 'T. H. D.' giver of this book is likely Ernest's father, Thomas Davies, who was a Baptist clergyman.Twenty-two pages of adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding.
