FOREWORD A BOY of eight, shy, sensitive, over-serious for his years, for he had lived them in the tumult of a great war, who, in the years to come, was destined to be part of an even greater, stood with his family in the hushed stillness of the main street of a fine old Southern city and witnessed a grim sight. The President of the Confederate States of America, Jeffer son Davis, a captive, under guard of Federal soldiers, was passing through Augusta. What impression the child had of this graveincident his most recent biographer fails to tell us.
