Incidences of diabetes are increasing rapidly in specific populations, and has become a public health concern in many communities around the world. This concern includes Punjabi speakers in the South Fraser Health Region - adjacent to Vancouver, Canada. There is administrative interest in the health implications, especially for vulnerable groups, many of whom are English language low-literate. This study focuses on determinants of health, low English language literacy, and the forms of access to health information about managing a chronic condition. The discussion includes psychosocial aspects, such as the 'Golden Jail,' whereby the immigrant appears to enjoy a much better lifestyle, but at a personal and social cost. The researcher conducted surveys with Punjabi speaking diabetes patients, with health care providers and practitioners, and key informants within the community. Conclusions and recommendations are included. Although this study focused on a south Asian community, there are other communities - worldwide - that may recognize themselves in similar lived experiences.
