Bernard S. Cohn:
Colonialism and Its Forms of Knowledge: The British in India (Princeton Studies in Culture/Power/History) - edizione con copertina flessibile

ISBN: 9780691000435

[SR: 367722], Paperback, [EAN: 9780691000435], Princeton University Press, Princeton University Press, Book, [PU: Princeton University Press], 1996-09-08, Princeton University Press, Bernard Cohn's interest in the construction of Empire as an intellectual and cultural phenomenon has set the agenda for the academic study of modern Indian culture for over two decades. His earlier publications have shown how dramatic British innovations in India, including revenue and legal systems, led to fundamental structural changes in Indian social relations. This collection of his writings in the last fifteen years discusses areas in which the colonial impact has generally been overlooked. The essays form a multifaceted exploration of the ways in which the British discovery, collection, and codification of information about Indian society contributed to colonial cultural hegemony and political control. Cohn argues that the British Orientalists' study of Indian languages was important to the colonial project of control and command. He also asserts that an arena of colonial power that seemed most benign and most susceptible to indigenous influences--mostly law--in fact became responsible for the institutional reactivation of peculiarly British notions about how to regulate a colonial society made up of "others." He shows how the very Orientalist imagination that led to brilliant antiquarian collections, archaeological finds, and photographic forays were in fact forms of constructing an India that could be better packaged, inferiorized, and ruled. A final essay on cloth suggests how clothes have been part of the history of both colonialism and anticolonialism., 271343, Great Britain, 12447586031, 20th Century, 12447587031, 21st Century, 271352, Anglo-Saxon, 772172, Crimean War, 271353, Early British & Roman Britain, 12447590031, England, 771740, English Civil War, 771748, Falklands War, 271346, Georgian & Regency Britain, 771746, Industrial Revolution, 4117751, Scotland, 271345, Stuart Britain, 771734, The Norman Conquest & Norman Britain, 271344, The Plantaganets & Medieval England, 4117761, Wales, 771738, Wars of the Roses, 271480, Europe, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 771718, World History, 12447629031, Civilisation & Culture, 12447630031, Cold War, 278066, Discovery & Exploration, 772016, Maritime History & Piracy, 275899, Revolutions & Coups, 772066, Slavery, 276593, Women in History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271287, Middle East, 271289, Bahrain, 271194, Egypt, 271298, Iran, 271299, Iraq, 13157711031, Israel & Palestine, 271301, Jordan, 271291, Kuwait, 271302, Lebanon, 271292, Oman, 271293, Qatar, 271294, Saudi Arabia, 271304, Syria, 271305, Turkey, 271295, United Arab Emirates, 271296, Yemen, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271283, India, 271248, Asia, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271279, South Asia, 271248, Asia, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 4119261, Academic Sociology, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 496558, Europe, 496554, Countries & Regions, 275870, Government & Politics, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 496560, Middle East, 496554, Countries & Regions, 275870, Government & Politics, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 496562, South East Asia, 496554, Countries & Regions, 275870, Government & Politics, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 276456, Ethnography & Ethnology, 276412, Anthropology, 276411, Social Sciences, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 276413, Social & Cultural, 276412, Anthropology, 276411, Social Sciences, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 496674, Cultural Studies, 276411, Social Sciences, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 276522, Sociology, 496634, Family & Social Groups, 276303, Law & Disorder, 496644, Methodology & Research, 276447, Population & Demography, 276482, Social Issues, 276530, Sociological Theories, 496640, Sociology of Work, 276411, Social Sciences, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books
