At the beginning of the 20th century the British Empire was at its height, with its army in the forefront of the mission to bring what it saw as the tremendous civilizing benefits of the British way of life to nations it considered were still languishing in the dark ages. In 1903, amid concerns that Russian involvement in Tibet threatened British-Indian interests, a British Missionary Force under the leadership of Colonel Francis Younghusband crossed over the border from British India and invaded Tibet. Younghusband - with his pomp, bravado, single-mindedness and determination - was unable to tolerate what he considered the insolent attitude of the Dalai Lama and inflicted considerable defeats on the Tibetans in several one-sided battles. These excerpts from diaries and from official correspondence between the Commission and India relate the progress of the expeditionary force and subsequent negotiations with the Tibetan government - which culminated in the signing of a peace agreement on 7 September 1904.
