SOLDIER, ESCAPER, SPYMASTER, POLITICIAN - Airey Neave was assassinated in the House of Commons car park in 1979.Forty years after his death,Patrick Bishop's lively,action-packed biography examines the life, heroic war and death of one of Britain's most remarkable 20th century figures. Airey Neave was one of the most extraordinary figures of his generation.Taken prisoner during WW2,he was the first British officer to escape from Colditz and using the code name 'Saturday' became a key figure in the IS9 escape and evasion organisation which spirited hundreds of Allied airmen and soldiers out of Occupied Europe. A lawyer by training,he served the indictments on the Nazi leaders at the Nuremburg war trials. An ardent Cold War warrior,he was mixed up in several of the great spy scandals of the period. Most people might consider these achievements enough for a single career, but he went on to become the man who made Margaret Thatcher, mounting a brilliantly manipulative campaign in the 1975 Tory leadership to bring her to power. And yet his death is as fascinating as his remarkable life.On Friday, 30 March 1979,a bomb planted beneath his car exploded while he was driving up the ramp of the House of Commons underground car park, killing him instantly. The murder was claimed by the breakaway Irish Republican group, the INLA.His killers have never been identified. Patrick Bishop's new book, published to mark the 40th anniversary of his death,is a lively and concise biography of this remarkable man.It answers the question of who killed him and why their identities have been hidden for so long and is written with the support of the Neave family. Stanley Matthews is a legend, the first superstar of world football. In this, his long-awaited autobiography completed just before his death in February 2000,he vividly brings to life some of football's greatest ever matches, offering absorbing personal accounts of the game's legendary players. He relives his memorable performance in the FA Cup final of 1953,arguably the greatest of them all,as he inspired Blackpool's comeback. But he was also there when the England team had to give the Nazi salute in Berlin in 1938 and at the Burnden Park disaster in 1946 - events that have transcended football and become part of British history. Here are the untold stories behind many of football's greatest games and characters. The unguarded asides, the camaraderie, the drama and colour are all revealed in this remarkable memoir.Players of the past and present come under his expert scrutiny, and as he highlights the changes that have taken place over the decades, both on the pitch and off it,he sheds a unique and engrossing light on the sport he loves. 'The Way It Was' is the compelling and hugely entertaining portrait of a man who was loved and respected throughout the world. It is a unique look at football from one of its greatest players, and is also essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how football, and society, have changed over the last 70 years. [Stanley Matthews was born in Stoke-on-Trent,February 1915.At 15 he joined the groundstaff of Stoke City FC.He made his League debut for them in 1932 in the era of Dixie Dean, and played his last game at 50 in the age of George Best.He played for Stoke until 1947,when he moved to Blackpool. He reached three FA Cup finals in the next six seasons, eventually winning the competition in 1953. He returned to Stoke City in 1961 and finished his career in 1965.He won 54 caps for England between 1934 and 1957,as well as playing in 29 wartime internationals. The oldest player ever to appear in the top division of English football, tanley Matthews made 697 League appearances, spanning a record 33 years, and played his last game in Brazil at the age of 70.In all he completed more than 1800 matches, never once being cautioned or sent off.He was the first ever Footballer of the Year(1948),and the first European Footballer of the Year (1956). He was the first footballer ever to be awarded the CBE and then the first to be knighted (1965),and remains the only one to receive the award while still playing.] He died peacefully on Feb 23rd,2000. It is only the exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading - particularly for the dw/dj.Despite them,it really is an exceptional copy for its cleanliness and brightness. It is now well known that the breaking of the German Enigma code played a crucial part in the outcome of WW2.Churchill referred to the Bletchley Park codebreakers as the geese that laid golden eggs and never cackled. But breaking Enigma was not just about brilliant mathematicians and professors at Bletchley Park.Bletchley's codebreaking stars such as Alan Turing and Harry Hinsley certainly made an outstanding contribution. But a much wider group was also involved: men such as Hans Thilo Schmidt, the German who gave the Allies their first clues on how to break Enigma, and Lieutenant Tony Farson, who captured Enigma codebooks from a German U-boat - one of many heroic but hitherto ubknown British and American sailors without whose bravery Enigma would never have been broken. To break Enigma, and particularly the all important Naval Enigma code, the codebreakers had to rely on the daring exploits of secret agents and spies, naval officers and ordinary seamen who risked, and in some cases lost, their lives snatching the Enigma codebooks from under the noses of Nazi officials and from sinking German ships and submarines. Using new material from British and American archives, and interviews with some of the last surviving witnesses to the Enigma saga,Hugh Sebag-Montefiore can at last tell the true story of how the Naval Enigma code was broken. The romance of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor has been called the greatest love story of the 20thC. However, with the first edition of this biography in 1988, highly acclaimed author Charles Higham used explosive secret intelligence files to reveal a far darker side to their forty-year relationship. Now the author has revisited and updated his international bestseller, resulting in a fascinating, and at times shocking, expose of Wallis Simpson and our own royal family. New and disturbing revelations have come to light, adding to the now classic story of an illegitimate child from Baltimore who rose to become the mistress of the king of England and brought about his abdication.Although Wallis gained control of the monarch through sexual techniques learned in China, she risked losing everything through a reckless and sustained affair with a prominent public figure,at the same time as a major blackmail plot threatened to ruin her.Fascinating revelations include newly released FBI files that demonstrate,as no other source has done, the extent of the Duchess's espionage activities and how she conspired against Britain in the interest of Hitler. This is an absorbing account of the complex and self-serving life of a woman who very nearly became the queen of England. By June 1944,hundreds of thousands of British and American soldiers and airmen were prisoners of war in camps across Nazi Germany. The war was reaching its endgame. On the Eastern Front the Red Army was advancing, the front line moving through Poland and towards the border with Germany. And in the west,British and American troops were storming the beaches of northern France. News of the D-Day landings, heard on secret camp radios, filled the prisoners with hope, but their joy turned into foreboding as their captors reacted to the threat. Many POWs feared they would be killed by the retreating German armies rather than allowed to fall into the hands of the Russians.Instead,in the depths of winter, their guards forced them to march out of the camps and further into Germany, away from their would-be liberators. The marches were long and desperately arduous. Some POWs walked for more than 500 miles and were on the road for many months.Hundreds died of exhaustion, disease and starvation. Those who survived were awed by their experience. How they escaped with their lives and eventually reached home is a gripping story of endurance and courage. John Nichol (himself a prisoner of war in the Gulf conflict in 1991) and Tony Rennell have interviewed many veterans, travelling with some of them back to the site of the camps, and retracing parts of the marches. In 'The Last Escape' they relate the astonishing history of these unrecognized heroes, now in their seventies and eighties and reliving their extraordinary experiences publicly for the first time. Major Len Manderstam was one of the most remarkable secret agents of the Second World War.Born in Riga and a fluent Russian speaker,he was to be recruited to the Special Operations Executive soon after war broke out and became head of its Russian section.During the Revolution Manderstam founded a school militia which freed political prisoners and as a teenager became a colonel in Trotsky's Red Army on the Eastern Front. Horrified by Bolshevik atrocities,he rebelled and was thrown into Lubianka prison, narrowly escaping the firing squad. He left Russia for Africa in the 1920's and joined SOE in 1939.He headed the newly-formed Angola section and was involved in clandestine missions to blow up Nazi supply stores and sabotage U-boat fuel.He also arranged single-handed the capture of a Vichy French ship and its valuable cargo for which he was made an MBE.After serving in North Africa,Italy,Spain,Portugal,France and Germany, he was appointed head of SOE Russian section. His tasks included checking out reports that large numbers of Russian exiles were serving in the German Army and liaising closely with his NKVD counterparts in the Soviet secret service. He later led protests against the forcible repatriation of Soviet prisoners, giving grave warnings to the Foreign Secretary, Anthony Eden and to the Prime Minister, but to no avail. He described this action as 'one of the most horrible and despicable in British history, condemning more than two million people to execution or the living death of Soviet labour camps'.These memoirs not only point towards a man of exceptional talent and strength of character but also uncover the little-known networks of the Special Operations Executive in neutral countries. March 1942.With the Allies reeling from defeat on all fronts,Britain's wartime leader conceives of a mission as outrageous as it is seemingly impossible,is to found an ultra-secret deception force inspired by his escape, consisting of fluent German speakers equipped with German weapons and uniforms, and driving German vehicles flying the swastika. They are to attempt the most extraordinary ruse of WWII, driving thousands of miles across the desert to bluff their way into a Nazi stronghold the enemy believes utterly invulnerable.Vintage Churchill, this desperate attempt to turn the tide of Axis victories would break just about every known rule of war. Written with Lewis's signature authenticity and dramatic verve,'SAS Ghost Patrol' is peopled by a cast of the utterly extraordinary: Buck himself, the quintessential British eccentric and adventurer; Jock Haselden, desert spy and would-be assassin nicknamed the 'Lawrence of WWII'; David Russell,'the Flying Scotsman',whose only worry was what to do when the war came to an end; and Merlyn Haruru Craw, whose speciality was blowing up trees on his father's farm. In its outrageous rule-breaking and ferocity, this is a mission that only the British could have conceived. An epic of daring, courage, tragedy and against-all-odds survival,it may read like the stuff of myth or legend, but every word is true. Interior text pages are tight and white. Dust jacket is complete with flap price $4.00. Some wear around the edges. This first English edition was limited to 1200 copies. This Lithuanian novel Crosses is a story that was lived by thousands of men and women in the period beginning about 1940 in Europe, when two tyrants, Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, conspired to destroy and absorb the territory and peoples lying between them. Some awaited the infringing newcomers with hopeful anxiety, thinking they could better their condition; others saw the newcomers as subjugating aggressors. Kreivenas, the Lithuanian hero of Crosses, belonged to the former group; he saw economic and social salvation in the coming of the Red Order, and he did all in his power to speed its way. How Kreivenas saw his dream turn to doom is admirably told in this first Lithuanian novel ever to be translated into the English language. Outside of its framework, Crosses is a unique novel; it is unique in the way it reveals practical Communism to the naked eye, to the eye of the common man. Theoretical analysis of Communism has no place here. Stark, brutal fact forever stigmatizes the system as crude, lawless, irresponsible and incompetent. Aside from the political conflict in Crosses, all of the human passions pass in review: Pride, Greed, Lust, Love, Hatred. In turn, Kreivenas calls them all forth in his futile search for power and dependence, in his headlong, savage lust to gratify his selfish ambition. Crosses is a tender love story, a ruthless attack on religion, a book of pious devotion, a villainous confession, a memoir of penitence. It cannot fail to stir the reader, and it is told by a master of Lithuanian letters, Vincas Ramonas, a new light in the firmament of foreign authors. Vincas Ramonas is not new among authors; he began writing in 1925, in Lithuania, where he was born in 1905. A graduate of the Lithuanian University at Kaunas, he earned his livelihood as a teacher, writing in his spare time. There was a period when he wrote nothing. It was after he fled from Lithuania in 1944 that he had his first literary triumph-it was the publication of Crosses, a book that was both hailed and condemned, a book that raised tempers and brought forth praises. The book was read and reread, in Latvian and German now in English. The publishers are proud to present this first Lithuanian novel in English to the reader., Lithuanian Days Publishers, 1954, 2.75, London: Odhams Press LTD, 1945. Originally a newspaper publisher, founded in 1890, it took the name Odhams Press Ltd in 1920 when it merged with John Bull magazine. By 1937 it had founded the first colour weekly, Woman, for which it set up and operated a dedicated high-speed print works. The company also owned Ideal Home (founded 1920) and acquired the equestrian magazine Horse and Hound. Later, Odhams expanded into book publishing, for example publishing Winston Churchill's Painting as a Pastime, Rupert Gunnis's Dictionary of British Sculptors 1660-1851, and an edition of the complete works of William Shakespeare.Throughout the 1960s, Odhams Books Ltd (likewise founded by Odhams Press) operated the Companion Book Club (CBC). This published a large series of hard cover novels.According to Susan M Penn's history of Long Street at Sherborne, Dorset, as verified by Harrop's historical house survey and by local census information, the house known since 1968 as Mistletoe Cottage was occupied in 1834 by John Odhams. His eldest son, William, grew up to be a compositor: possibly serving his apprenticeship with Langdon and Harker at the Sherborne Mercury Printing Office in Long Street, according to his great granddaughter. However, at the rear of Mistletoe Cottage is a substantial brick-built shed. The flat flooring of this shed is very solid, completed with thick oak planking, well able to support and withstand heavy items of machinery such as a printing press. Earthworks next to the shed in or around 2002 revealed evidence of many colored printing inks still visible in the soil.In 1834 William Odhams left for London, where he initially worked for The Morning Post. In 1847 he went into partnership with William Biggar in Beaufort Buildings, Savoy, London; and in the 1870s he started the business known as 'William Odhams'. He sold the business to his two sons, John Lynch Odhams and William James Baird Odhams, in 1892. Odhams Limited, created in 1898, in turn became Odhams Press by 1920.In 1960 Cecil Harmsworth King, chairman of the Daily Mirror newspaper, made an approach to Odhams on behalf of Fleetway Publications Ltd (formerly the Amalgamated Press). Odhams' Board found this too attractive to refuse and, in 1961, Odhams was taken over by Fleetway. In 1963 its holdings were amalgamated with those of the George Newnes Company, Fleetway, and others, to form the International Publishing Corporation (known as IPC).Between 1964 and 1968 Odhams operated as a subsidiary of IPC. In 1968 Odhams encountered financial problems, partly due to unfavorable economic conditions in Britain. As a result of this, and of IPC's desire to rationalize its titles and eliminate duplication, the items published by the Odhams Press imprint were closed or transferred to IPC Magazines Ltd, another IPC subsidiary. This contained the losses range within Odhams, which was a limited company with separate liability, but, in consequence, Odhams became financially unviable. On 1 January 1969 it effectively ceased to exist as a publishing business, when publication of its last surviving title was transferred to IPC Magazines Ltd., Odhams Press LTD, 1945, 2, Book is pristine, extremely tight, clean and unmarked-DJ has some shelf wear-" "This family did not have a drop of humanity in it before. I think I've changed that." --Diana For all that's been written about the People's Princess, no one has yet penetrated palace walls to reveal what has really happened to the Royal Family she left behind ten years ago--until now. In the manner of his No. 1 New York Times bestsellers The Day Diana Died, The Day John Died, and his bestsellers Jack and Jackie, Jackie After Jack and Diana's Boys, Christopher Andersen draws on important new sources to paint the first full portrait of a Royal Family still haunted by the ghost of Diana. All the compelling elements of a true dynastic saga are here: power, sex, wealth, intrigue, betrayal, tragedy and scandal. But so too is the Princess's legacy of love and compassion--alive in the sons who have grown and are now forging legacies of their own. Among After Diana's stunning revelations: The many times Diana predicted with uncanny accuracy how she would die; why she feared for Camilla's life as well; the surprising, never-before-revealed identity of the woman Diana really felt might one day be Queen. New details about the days after Diana's death--Charles's reaction the moment he saw Diana's body, how Camilla dealt with suddenly becoming the most hated woman in the world, her secret eight-year campaign to replace Diana. How William and Harry have dealt with the public and private pressures--from drugs to Nazi uniforms to lap dances and barroom brawls, fresh details about the Princes' wild behavior and the demons that still haunt them. How Charles cheated on Camilla as well as Diana; the intriguing other women in the Prince of Wales's life. Inside Operation Paget, Scotland Yard's ongoing probe into Diana's death--why, ten years after, investigators were still shocked by what they found. The day Charles was asked point-blank by Scotland Yard if he killed his wife--and what he said. The many beautiful young women in the lives of William and Harry over the past ten years--including Will's longtime love Kate Middleton, her chances of one day becoming Queen and why he fears she may meet the same fate as his mother. William's obsession with speed; Harry's hunger for risk-taking; a thirst for battle that could lead both Princes to combat in Iraq. New information on whether the Queen plans to step aside and who she wants to see succeed her on the throne. Sometimes heartbreaking, often inspiring, always riveting, After Diana is more than just the first comprehensive, compelling biography of the House of Windsor as it is today. It is a bittersweet tale of love, loss, duty, and destiny. September 1941.A lone soldier stumbles out of the Saharan wastes - sun-blasted and on the brink of death. He is immediately taken captive by British frontline troops, but this it transpires is no enemy. It is Captain a Henry Cecil Buck who has dressed himself as a German officer and stolen a German truck in a desperate bid to escape. First English Edition . Hard Back. Very Good/Good. 6 1/4" x 8 3/4. Makarevicius, S. - Jacket and Illustrations. 329 Pages in 35 Chapters. Shows some light ageing to the boards.
