London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1982. Dust jacket unclipped. Black cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. No inscription. 307 pages clean and tight. Between Jerusalem and Babylon, between Athens and Atlantis - the symbolic good and evil cities of the philosophers - lies the third city, which is `real life'. Since the Renaissance, Western philosophy has been ruined by two-dimensional thinking: its exponents have invented `practical' utopias according to their own tastes. But wiser thinkers have always known that perfection is to be found within the third city itself. Plato's dialogues were designed to trigger this perception in his readers or hearers, and not to describe city-states he would have liked to construct in Greece. Borna Bebek argues that, if we are to penetrate the real nature of the communities in which we live, we must follow the dialectical method of doing philosophy, in opposition to the sophists and positivists of all ages. A philosopher should grasp `aspects' of the world, without reducing these to the level of mutually exclusive `concepts': this task is vital to the health of society, but modern philosophy has largely failed to perform it, and has systematically misunderstood the writings of those who did - it has treated the three cities as if they were mutually independent, and divorced theory from praxis. To revive the spirit of true philosophy, it may be necessary to look beyond the academic confines of the subject. Avoiding the false extremes of idealism and materialism, we must allow ethics once more to merge with epistemology. The Third City is both an exposition and a demonstration of this ethically based philosophy. It allows the Platonic dialogues to cast a new light on modern physics, economics and politics - from the nature of space-time to the problems of national defence - and it examines the mythological themes common to Christian, Muslim, Zoroastrian, Hindu and Taoist scriptures. Only such a realistic application of eternal dialectic can break philosophers free of their ivory tower, to deal at last with the burning issues of our time.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo., Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1982, Outskirts Press. Paperback. New. Paperback. 424 pages. Dimensions: 8.5in. x 5.5in. x 0.9in.Astonishing discreet indiscretions are revealed! The author chronicles a gripping saga starting from voyaging to Europe just after WW II. Liberated from the confines of same sex boarding schools, many collegiate students socialized with the avant-garde dispositions of their continental compatriots and enjoyed a sanctioned lifestyle. For the ensuing six years friends developed relationships; many become life long commitments. The reader intimately experiences collegiate life, maturation, and relations while living on the continent. Then after receiving master degrees, ensuing lifetime relations are chronicled from marriage and parenthood to untimely deaths whereupon destiny delivers parentless progeny full circle to a surrogate mother and collegiate friend to be raised into mutuality, disabused of mysticism, and manifest by the parents pragmatic, conservative convictions, and political leanings, juxtaposed demagogic liberalism which they reject because historically it destroys the society it professes. FROM THE PUBLISHER - The media image of the Middle East today is often that of sudden oil wealth, war and international terrorism, a sad contrast with the image that obsessed the nineteenth-century European writers and artists and an even sadder one when compared with that of the intense cultural energy that has characterized this vast region for millennia. The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the Middle East and North Africa analyses the region from its pre-Islamic period to the present day, from its golden ages to the contemporary era when it is struggling to retain its roots as it copes with regional conflicts and the penetration of modern technology. Academics and journalists who are international experts in their individual fields are gathered in this one volume to study the region in great depth and with perceptive and often colourful insights. The cultural influences of the three great monotheistic faiths born in the Region - Judaism, Christianity and Islam - are covered through all their main aspects such as history, the sciences and the arts. Although Islam has clearly had the greatest influence on the region, the early religions and Judaism and Christianity are thoroughly studied by specialist writers. So, too, are minority sects such as the Zoroastrians and the Druze and ethnic minority groups such as Berbers, Kurds and Pushtuns. The Middle East and North Africa, a region that spreads from Morocco in the west to Afghanistan in the east, Turkey in the north to Somalia and Djibouti in the south, contains many races and many religious groups and sub-groups. However, empires such as those of the ‘Abbasids and the Ottomans held sway for periods over most of the region, with Arab dynasties creating a Golden Age in Spain and the Ottomans extending their rule as far as the gates of Vienna. Possibly the most important element today is Islam but traditional cultural influences are also shared throughout the region. Part I — Land and Peoples — introduces the region with essays on geography and the region’s many linguistic groups as well as the role of the three great religions in Middle Eastern society. Part II covers History from the early Egyptian, Anatolian and Mesopotamian periods to the start of the Second World War. Part III — Societies and Economies — discusses the growth and development of the region from the decline of nomadism and the development of agriculture to the growth of industry, the development of the oil industry and the modern re-creation of an Islamic banking system. The section on social change studies subjects ranging from the role of women to modern legal systems, sport and the mass media. Part IV — Culture — looks in immense and fascinating detail at Islam as a traditional religion before discussing modern trends in Islam, Judaism and Christianity. The section on literature covers Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Armenian literature as well as Western literary and cultural attitudes to the region. The section on the visual arts traces artistic development from ancient Egyptian and Near Eastern Art to Islamic Art and gardens. The section on music covers musical theory and genres such as court, village and liturgical music. There are separate essays on subjects such as Cuisine, Theatre and Film. Science is studied in its ancient and present-day disciplines and the section also covers modern research. Part V, which represents about one-third of the book, studies the modern histories, economies and societies of the countries of the region from the start of the Second World War. It also looks at the history, economy and society of those peoples without a country, such as the Palestinians, the Kurds and the Armenians. This section is introduced by an essay which takes a bird’s-eye view of the post-war history of the region as a whole and is intended for cross-reference with country studies within Part V and with Part VI. Part VI studies inter-regional affairs, the region’s relationship with the Great Powers and specific current issues such as the Arab-Israeli problem, the Iran-Iraq War and the Lebanese civil war. The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the Middle East and North Africa covers the full spread of the region’s past and present in a lucid, comprehensive and highly readable manner, discussing not only the broad themes but the smallest countries in meticulous detail. Written for the general reader as well as for the specialist, and copiously illustrated with colour and black-and-white photographs, illustrations and maps, the book draws on the knowledge and skills of over eighty recognized experts in their fields. More than a mere reference work, it is designed to question as well as to inform and elucidate. It will be a valuable document not only for those concerned with the history, culture and sciences of the region but also for those involved in the problems of development and international affairs. inventory #10823 ISBN: 0521321905., Web of Wyrd Press.
