Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ...For this purpose it will be necessary to take a short survey of the history of O. E. gc-. This prefix undergoes, as is known, a gradual weakening in the course of the M. K. period (ge-, y-, /-), resulting in its complete dropping in N. E., except in a few isolated or obsolete forms1. Before its definite disappearance, however, (about the middle of the 14''h cent.) a great unsettledness, as is natural, prevails: the North and Midland dialects are generally more advanced than the South. If, thus, one cannot hope to be able to ascertain in general the relations between O. E.-forms and later formations, the difficulty is enhanced in the present instance by the varying use of the prefix in the O. E. forms (see above). The different possibilities that present themselves here have been alluded to in the case of fall, and will be discussed in each several case. Often, however, we must content ourselves with merely stating the forms found, as there is no evidence to be obtained on the point in question. In order to mark the gradual progression towards prefixless forms, the inverse order to that in the preceding section is adopted, those forms being placed first in which O.
