The book re-interprets the US occupation of Japan from 1945 - 1952 as a problematic instance of cold war feminist mobilization rather than successful democratization of Japanese women as previously argued. Creating an interdisciplinary dialogue among three fields of studies - Occupation Studies, Cold War Studies, and Postcolonial Feminist Studies, the manuscript examines occupation records and other archival sources to argue that postwar gender reform was in fact part of cold war containment strategies that undermined rather than promoted women's political and economic rights and that American and Japanese women leaders both participated in as well as resisted hegemonic dynamics of race, gender, class, sexuality, and nation. The book sheds light on complex and contradictory implications of Western "feminist" interventions in Asia which collaborated with rather than challenged the politics of race, nation and empire, and suggests the need for critical rethinking of American feminist politics in the 20th century Asia-Pacific context.
