Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.; 239 pages; Description: 239 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 27 cm. Includes index. Subjects: Leigh-Mallory, George Herbert (1886-1924) --Mount Everest Expedition (1924) --Mountaineers --Great Britain --Biography. Summary: George Leigh Mallory's reported explanation of why he wanted to conquer Mount Everest is the most succinct -- and maybe the most famous -- remark in the history of mountaineering. And when he vanished into the clouds on June 8, 1924, near the summit of the highest peak on Earth, he became a legendary figure -- and the leading actor in one of the most compelling mysteries in the annals of 20th-century exploration. Did Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine, reach their exalted goal before they died? When a research expedition found Mallory's body in May 1999, new clues emerged to help in determining whether they did in fact succeed, 29 years before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first documented ascent. Last Climb is the spellbinding tale of what is known of Mallory's final attempt on Everest, but it's much more as well: an account of his two earlier expeditions to the Himalayan giant and a fascinating, evocative, superbly illustrated portrait of a daring era, when gentleman mountaineers climbed in leather boots and tweeds. Everest veteran and renowned filmmaker, David Breashears, and Audrey Salkeld, one of mountaineering's preeminent historians, make expert guides to this riveting story, highlighted by spectacular vintage photographs taken by Mallory and members of the British Mount Everest expeditions of the 1920s, as well as others culled from the archives of the Royal Geographical Society. In addition, the book boasts breathtaking, full-color photography of the high Himalaya, along with dramatic shots from the 1999 Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition. A book in the finest tradition of National Geographic, Last Climb is at once a thrilling narrative of challenge and courage; a treasury of rare historical images; and an unforgettable panorama of a forbidden, almost medieval world, the forbidding mountain at its heart, and the indomitable men who were willing to pay with their lives to master it -- and win immortality in return., Washington : National Geographic Society, 1999, 0, 2021. Paperback. New. About the book-Nicholas Roerich's classic 1929 mystic travel book is back in print He kept a diary of his travels by yak and camel through a remote region still largely unknown today. An intellectual as well as an adventurer, he chronicles his expedition through Sinkiang, Altai-Mongolia and Tibet from 1924 to 1928 in twelve exciting chapters detailing his encounters along the parched byways of Central Asia. With a special interest in geographical mysteries and arcane and mystical arts, he searches for the hidden cities of Shambala and Agartha. Roerich's original drawings, as well as reproductions of his inspiring paintings illustrate this unique travel book. In recording daily events on his amazing 1920s expedition through the lowlands and mountains of India, China, Mongolia and the Russian-Siberian steppes, Roerich provides the reader with an insightful panorama of richly detailed personal observations and vignettes of many cultures, religious and supernatural beliefs, and sometimes inexplicable events, set against an awesome geography of our planet's unforgiving geology and climate. There is even a startling entry by Roerich of his and his companions' clearly witnessing a strange aerial object that predates the advent of the UFO by two decades. '[A] neatly organized visual compendium of facts and information about the earth and its geology. The premise states that the defining forces shaping the earth are linked to gravity and heat, both solar and geothermal. From the earth in space to current concerns about the future of the planet, the book's scope encompasses plate tectonics, land forms, weather and climate, and earthquakes and volcanoes. A hotel made of salt blocks in Bolivia, a Texas blind salamander, a fossil of an ancient sea creature found atop the Himalayas are just a few of the enticing sidebars on the topical spreads. Full-color photographs and drawings, diagrams, charts, satellite photos and maps, and cross-sections and cutaways illuminate scientific ideas and concepts in a panorama of visual images, without overcrowding the page. Across the gloomy, empty dining room of the old Hotel Panorama, Kathmandu, an elderly woman sits, alone. Her toast and marmalade might have been a clue as to her nationality, but, convinced she͛s German, the callow Australian sitting two tables away greets her in what he assumes is her native tongue… She replies to his 'Guten Morgen' in ringing Home Counties English. 'Good morning, young man', following that revelation with an invitation to join her to take tea. Her name, which he hears imperfectly, is either 'Pitchard' or 'Prichett', but she quickly tells him that people usually address her as Mrs P. She is, she explains, from Yorkshire and is almost halfway through her annual, solo pilgrimage to India, to buy a good supply of tea in Darjeeling. This year, 1971, she has decided to spend a couple of days exploring Kathmandu and surrounds, on foot. The young Australian and his partner are on their way from Melbourne to the University of York. Fate and a bus crash sees these three Yorkshire-bound travelers unexpectedly sharing railway compartments, local buses, and other public transport as they make their way towards Europe following the Hippie Trail. As they traverse countries such as Afghanistan and Iran – dangerous places, then as now – Mrs P relates harrowing, hair-raising, often hilarious accounts of her past adventures. This is the story of a brief, surprising companionship. ., Self published., 0, Daya Publishing House, 2007. Hardcover. New. Vedas aren`t just the scriptural texts, but the earliest record of Indo, Aryan civilisation. On the basis of this corpus of mankind`s oldest literature, together with his indepth analyses of the later-day Puranic writings, Professor Bhargava offers the first ever systematic, well-knit study of the Aryan expansion on the Indian subcontinent since c. 3100 bc. Retrieving, thus, hard historical facts from the complex Sanskrit verses of ancient seers, Dr. Bhargava`s book opens a fascinating panorama of life in Vedic India -- highlighting, in particular, its powerful dynastic families, its rishis, society, economic conditions, political setup; religion, philosophy and literature. The book also includes a vivid description of the Aryan homeland, its geography, flora, fauna, and a lot else. Now in its third enlarged, fully revrsed and updated edition; India in the Vedic Age has, ever since its first appearance in 1956, been acclaimed not only by prestigious journals or discerning readers, but also by many IndologistsISanskrit historians of worldwide eminence, including notably, A.L. Basham, K.D. Vajpeyi, Ludwik Stembach, T.G. Mainkar, and G.V. Devas. While A.S. Altekar acknowledged it as "a distinct advance over Pargiter`s work", Dr. Bhargava`s book is certainly, as U.N. Ghoshal observed, "the most original work of our time". Book Contents Preface to the Third Edition Preface to the Second Edition Preface to the First Edition Abbreviations Transliteration System 1. Washington : National Geographic Society, 1999. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw. Trained as an artist and a lawyer, his main interests were literature, philosophy, archaeology, and especially art. Roerich was a dedicated activist for the cause of preserving art and architecture during times of war. He was nominated several times to the longlist for the Nobel Peace Prize.
