Forty years on from the act of vandalism that damaged Michelangelo’s Pietà, the Vatican Museums and the Fabric of St. Peter organised a convention, held on 21 May 2013, to commemorate the restoration of this admirable masterpiece, gravely disfigured by a madman’s hammer in 1972. This volume, available in Italian, is a collection of the Conference Proceedings, which retrace the art-historical and conservational events linked to the work. It offers valuable contributions from Vittorio Federici, director of the Vatican Museums Cabinet of Scientific Research at the time, and Nazzareno Gabrielli, assistant Inspector of the Cabinet during the same period: research and an account of the damage, the complex plan of the restoration works, the choice of techniques used to carry out the intervention and the use of a plaster cast. Following, the history of the sculpture itself, with a chronicle of his various locations over the centuries. It makes evocative memory to the famous documentary La violenza e la Pietà by Brando Giordani, screened during the conference. Of particular interest is the specialist analysis carried out by Scientific Laboratories of the Museums, on the function of the copies of the artworks to support past and future restorations, and the consequent proposal to create a virtual gallery of plaster casts.
