New York 1992, Times Books, US first edition, hard bound in dust jacket, VG/VG CONDITION, xvii, 317 pages, illustrations, notes, bibliog, index.---------------------------------------------------When two 7.5-mm rounds were shot pointblank into Gerald Bull's skull in March 1990, it was the end of a life that had begun with great promise and the beginning of a story that was to shock the world. Exactly who killed him was not known, but the real mystery was the man himself and his legacy. Only weeks after the assassination, illegal Iraq-bound shipments of parts for a supergun an invention of Bull's that could fire shells 2,500 mileswere seized in England, Turkey, Greece, and West Germany. At the end of the Gulf war, the United Nations would discover that Saddam Hussein had already built two superguns in Iraq.-----------------------------------------------------Born in Canada, Bull was the youngest person ever to receive a doctorate from the University of Toronto; his particular expertise was measuring the performance of objects in flight. In the 1960s, he was involved in ajoint U.S.-Canadian venture to develop huge guns capable of firing satellites into orbit, but his dream of doing so was forced to end when funding for the project was canceled. He began to diversify away from pure space research and turned to designing artillery and shells. It was Bull who secretly designed the first Star Wars system, twenty years before Reagan announced his version; it was Bull who designed special shells for the Navy to bombard North Vietnam.---------------------------------------------------------In the late 1970s, the CIA encouraged Bull to build a new gun for the South Africans, despite the U.S. arms embargo. Equipment was smuggled from the United States and Canada with the assistance of the CIA and other government officials. When news of the deal leaked, Bull was made the fall guy for the CIA and was arrested, tried, and jailed. Embittered and deserted by his former friends, he left America for Brussels and fell in with arms merchants and third world countries who saw his jail sentence as a qualification to enter their ranks. It was Bull who laid the foundations for the now-prosperous arms industries in China, Israel, Chile, South Africa, and Yugoslavia, and in the late 1980s he was asked to do the same for Saddam Hussein. It was artillery designed by Bull that confronted American troops during Operation Desert Stormartillery that had a longer range than anything comparable in the Allied memory. Bull also contracted with the Iraqis to develop a giant gun capable of firing shells loaded with chemical and biological weapons at Israel, Europe, and even the United States. In this stunning work of investigative journalism, James Adams combines the excitement and drama of a thriller with a cast of extraordinary characters from the worlds of intelligence, government, and the arms business. This is the story of the most talented designer of artillery this century; a man betrayed, who in despair and anger fell into the world of seedy arms merchants and ambitious third world dictators., Athens: Anagnosis Books, 2008. Abridged from 'Reminiscences of Athens and the Morea: Extracts from a Journal of Travels in Greece, by the late Earl of Carnarvon, edited by his son the present Earl' first published in 1839 "Henry John George Herbert, the third Earl of Carnarvon, travelled from Athens to the Mani (Maina) through the Argolid, Arcadia and Laconia in 1839. Thus he witnessed the state of the new kingdom during its earliest years, from its capital city to its wildest and most intractable reaches. Few travellers had ventured before that time into the Mani, due to the fearsome reputation of its inhabitants. The notes made during his travels were published in 1869 by his son, the fourth earl of Carnarvon, Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert, with extensive commentary and explanations. They reveal the extraordinary state of society in the lawless region of the Mani.". Re-issue. Soft Cover. New Book from Greece., Anagnosis Books, 2008, Athens: Anagnosis Books, 2008.
