ALEXANDRE DUMAS - LOUISE DE LA VALLI mRaEk es her first appearance in the Musketeer romances of Alexandre Dumas in Twenty Years After, where she is introduced as the playmate and child-love of Raoul, Vicomte de Bragelonne, son of the Comte de la FBre the chivalric Athos of The Three Musketeers. In the opening chapters of The Vicornte de Bragelonne, she reappears, ten years later, a maid of honour in the suite of Gaston, Duke of Orleans, uncle of Louis XIV. At the Dukes court, Mademoiselle de la ValliQe is presented to her youthful sovereign, a momentous event that alters the whole course of her life. The story comes into action at that epoch in the reign of Louis XIV. when, on the death of Mazarin, he assumes to himself the uncontrolled exercise of kingly power. He has recognised the genius of Colbert, and called him to his side. He has determined to disgrace his First Minister, M. Fouquet, for malversation of the public revenues and secretly fortifying, for treasonable purposes, the seigniory of Belle-Isle-en-Mer. Louis feels himself every inch a king. In the language of the romance itself, he exclaims, Thirteen millions in my cellar Colbert bearing my purse, a d dlArtagnan carrying my sword-I am King indeed I DArtagnaa carrying his sword With Dumas for chronicler, the drama of French history can be borne onward only on the broad shoulders of the four redoubtable Musketeers. In spite of advancing years, dJArtagnan remains a miracle of activity and resource. He has just carried through a characteristic exploit in England, and has won for himself both riches and honour. In this English adventure he has received the aid of his old companion-in-arms, the Comte de la Fdre, whose high senseof duty has impelled him to quit the quiet pursuits of a country gentleman, and engage in the more exciting scenes of court and camp. But not for long. The call of duty honoured, he retires again to his estates, and henceforth - his career is subordinated to that of his son, Rqoul. L. V. A2 4 NOTE Aramis, the Chevalier dlHerblay, Bishop of Vannes, he who even in the ingenuous days of youth had ever a little secret to conceal, is now the arch-conspirator. He is the confidant of M. Fouquet, and the inspirer of all the desperate schemes of that falling minister. He, really, is responsible for the fortification of Belle-Isle, though Porthos is the nominal engineer. And Porthos, the Baron du Vallon, innocently involved in all these dangerous projects by his clever friend, Aramis-Porthos, large of heart, slow of wit, performs his prodigies of strength and valour without in the least understanding what it is all about. Royal personages in the romance are the Queen-Mother, Anne of Austria, the shadowy form of Maria Theresa, the young Queen, Philip, the Kings vain brother, and last but not least, Philips wife, Henrietta, sister to Charles 11. of England. This Princess, a born coquette, is, from the day of her arrival at the French court, a veritable storm-centre of love, jealousy, and intrigue. Even the King succumbs to the spell of his charming sisterin-law, and his subsequent defection arouses within her the bitterness and rancour of wounded pride. Among minor characters, place of honour may be given to Madame de Bellisre, faithfully attached to the interests of M. Fouquet. Then there are the courtiers Saint Aignan, de Guiche, Manicamp, Malicorne, and Princess Henriettas two vivacious maids ofhonour, Tonnay-Charente and Montalais. To these lively ladies must be added the gentle enthusiastic, la Vallisre. By the kind exertions of her friend, Mademoiselle de Montalais, she is enabled to forsake the dreary court at Blois to become a maid of honour in the household of the Princess. There, to his astonishment, her lover, Raoul, finds her...
